My Story

This summer, I will be taking on GB Ultra's 'Race Across Scotland', a remarkable and unique 215 mile, coast-to-coast ultra marathon following the beautiful Southern Upland Way.

I will have 100 hours to complete this epic challenge which will take me along beautiful coastline, over mountains, along valleys and through the beautiful forests of the Southern Uplands.

I am taking on this challenge in August 2022 to raise money for Willow Burn Hospice, a cause that is very close to my heart.

Race Across Scotland is one of the toughest Ultras in the UK and I have the opportunity to represent a charity very close to my heart. Willow Burn has been very special to me for several years, the team has provided exceptional palliative care to both my family and friends, and I wanted to say thank you for that, which is why I started fundraising and volunteering for the hospice.

Race Across Scotland is unlike any event I have ever participated in before, but I am really looking forward to it. It is daunting and I have no doubt, at times, it will get tough up there but I’m going to give it everything I have. For me the biggest challenge is going to be the mental side of things; there will be a lot of mind games with my brain telling my legs to stop but I will keep going. I will have a great support crew with me who know what I need and lots of encouragement from my family, friends and the team at Willlow Burn.

To give me some extra motivation as I take on the 'Race Across Scotland' I will be customising my Willow Burn running vest. When you donate, please leave me a motivational message too and I will have it printed on my vest.

Finishing my 2022 'Race Across Scotland' challenge will be a massive personal acheivement but also representing Willow Burn, and delivering the message of the services they provide will leave me bursting with pride.

Thank you! Ian x

About Willow Burn

Willow Burn Hospice is an oasis, right in the heart of Derwentside; a small hospice and community hub, which was founded over thirty years ago by two local women who recognised a need for improved end of life care for residents of rural County Durham.

Their aim is to relieve physical and emotional distress and control symptoms, provide care comfort and compassion at the end of life to embrace and support our patients, and their families and friends to achieve this.

The people of Derwentside rely on the services that Willow Burn provides and without voluntary donations, Willow Burn would simply not exist.  If you are able to, please donate what you can to this wonderful cause.
