Willow Burn Hospice

Willow Burn Hospice

About us

Willow Burn Hospice is an oasis, right in the heart of the countryside; a small, hospice and community hub, which was founded over thirty years ago by two local women who recognised a need for improved end of life care for residents of rural County Durham.

Our aim is to relieve physical and emotional distress and control symptoms, provide care comfort and compassion at the end of life to embrace and support our patients, and their families and friends to achieve this. Willow Burn’s nurse-led in-patient wing has successfully cared for patients for over 30 years now, enabling individuals and their families to feel at home with us.

"From the very first step into the hospice I felt really calm and welcome. Its quite a special place because you just feel care rushing towards you."

How We Can Help

At a time when peace and tranquillity is needed the most, Willow Burn Hospice provides a safe and quiet haven. The focus is on the individual and their needs through the provision of high quality community based care.

Willow Burn recognises that time is precious. We aim to safely support admission to the hospice in-patient unit at any time of day or night- we are here 24/7, 365 days a year. We also support families to be with their loved ones and to be part of their care if they wish.

"Only a poet could write the words to properly describe how utterly grateful myself and my family are for the help, care, respect and love you showed my mum. All I can say is thank you, thank you, thank you."

Help us today to support our tomorrow

We are enormously proud of our role in the community and our dedication to providing a vital service for people living with a life limiting illness and their families in Derwentside but we need your help to continue. If you are in a position to do so, please support your Local Hospice by giving a donation today, it will truly make a difference to patients and their families when they need it the most.

"When you go to Willow Burn cast your eyes around, see the angels scuttling by, so all are safe and sound! All the hustle and each tread, the smiles upon their faces. Willing hands and willing hearts, sometimes missed in other places. Concern, the order of the day is burned into their being doesn't need encouragement or any overseeing. Care, compassion, in the eyes, concern with every touch, all is freely given and they never ask for much. So turn your thoughts to Willow Burn where caring takes its course! Ladies, I salute you, the Angels of the North."
